Getting There
Sri Lanka is a true paradise for surfers. Just picture yourself sitting on your board in the warm ocean, gazing at palm trees on a tropical beach while waiting for the next perfect wave. The best part: you can experience exactly this feeling all year round. From November to April, the south coast offers ideal surf conditions, while from May to October, the east coast shows its full potential.
Below we’ll introduce you to both coasts, including the most popular surf towns:
The south coast of Sri Lanka is the place to be from November to April. Weligama is also the most famous surfing spot in Sri Lanka. If you prefer something a little quieter, there are various other surfing spots along the coast.
Weligama is not only the most famous but also the most popular surf town in Sri Lanka. The long sandy beach with mellow waves breaking along the entire bay provides perfect conditions for beginners learning to surf and for intermediates who want to improve their technique. On top of that, you’ll find countless cafés, restaurants, and bars, making Weligama a lively hub both in and out of the water. Many surfers start their first Sri Lanka trip here - and quite a few end up staying longer than planned. Find all surf camps in Weligama here.
Just a few minutes from Weligama lies Ahangama. Smaller and more relaxed, it offers a range of reef breaks that are best suited for intermediate and advanced surfers. Beginners usually head to Kabalana, where the waves are gentler and break over sand. Off the water, Ahangama has a laid-back vibe with cozy cafés and yoga studios. Discover surf camps in Ahangama here.
A small town located between Weligama and Ahangama, Midigama is known for its challenging reef breaks. It’s a great choice for intermediate and experienced surfers looking for a bit more power.
Famous for its two reef breaks - one left-hander and one right-hander - Mirissa is slightly less heavy than other reef waves, making it a good spot to gain your first reef experience. The town also offers plenty of restaurants and cafés, giving it a relaxed holiday feel.
Unawatuna isn’t just popular with surfers - it also attracts divers and classic holidaymakers. Here you’ll find both beach breaks and reef breaks, so there’s a suitable wave for every level. Beyond surfing, Unawatuna is a foodie hotspot with countless restaurants, a lively beach scene, and vibrant nightlife. Find here our favorite surf camp in Unawatuna.
This small, crescent-shaped bay is surrounded by jungle and has a distinctly alternative flair. With both a beach break and a point break, Hiriketiya offers great conditions for beginners and intermediates. Add yoga studios, hip cafés, and a welcoming international community, and you’ve got one of Sri Lanka’s most charming surf spots.
One of Sri Lanka’s classic surf towns, Hikkaduwa has a long-established surf scene and offers four different reef breaks, both lefts and rights. It can get crowded, but the excellent infrastructure and buzzing nightlife make it a popular choice for many surfers.
As soon as the surfing season in the south of the island comes to an end, the waves on the east coast come to life. Arugam Bay is the centre of attention here.
Arugam Bay is the meeting place for the surfing scene during the summer months. Right next to the small town, an endless right-hand wave awaits you, which is the perfect playground for both beginners and intermediates.
You can also reach various surf spots in the surrounding area by tuk-tuk. These include Peanut Farm and Whiskey Point, for example. As unusual as the names are, the waves here are perfect.
You can also look forward to an open and international community, relaxing on the beach and exploring the island's cuisine. All surf camps in Arugam Bay can be found here.
As you can see, Sri Lanka offers great waves no matter the time of year. Especially for beginners and intermediates, the island is a fantastic choice for a tropical surf holiday. Are you ready for your unforgettable adventure?
